You capture the sculptures play with light and dark well.

Thank you. Lighting was tough that day… I was glad the image came out the way that it did. Again… thank you for your kind comment…

That’s a truly a lost and desperate face. Great choice for the challenge Galen!

Thank you Jude. There are six of these face sculptures placed around the arch of the main entrance to this old building built in 1898. My understanding is the faces are intended to depict different attitudes and emotions… both positive and negative… of the students. I felt this “anger” one was the most explicit of the different expressions. The school is no longer at this location and the building is used by the Columbus Public Library.

I wonder what sort of a life deaf people had way back then.

Not very good. They were very isolated. Often the results of their hearing impairment was mistaken for a mental handicap. Putting handicapped people away in residential schools has never been the answer… yet even today that often is what happens. Placing deaf people into a subculture of what is now referred to as the “deaf community” just adds another disability to their impairment. The faces in stone around this archway are fascinating… yet sad in that they speak to the primitive conditions of deaf education of that day. And in many areas we haven’t made much progress.

So true Galen, there are so many ways where man hasn’t learned. I like the quote: The one thing that man has learned from history is that man has never learned from history!

Oops… if you happened to read my initial reply to this… you will probably notice that my mind was on an entirely different post. Sorry.
This is a very good quotation… and you are right… there is still so much to be learned and prejudices to overcome.

It could have been me having finger problems using my tablet that caused confusion with the reply!😁

You should see me when I try to text on my phone! My thumbs simply don’t match up to that tiny keyboard display. My grandkids can text so fast they deserve a speeding ticket! I’m so slow that by the time I am finished there have been two upgrades to the software!

Yes! I’ve also never heard of them before but it is a powerful rendition that I’m now totally hooked on! I simply can’t get the song out of my head. I’ve explained briefly in tomorrow’s post! (I wonder how they would do The Boxer… or Bridge Over Troubled water???)
