Neat flower! are those the ones that only flower every few years?? It does look like it’s carrying a torch! 🙂 T.

Some mature plants can bloom every year. I’ve had this one for 14 years and it has grown from a small single stalk plant in a pot to a huge 5 trunk beauty that is as tall as the house. Sometimes it has bloomed each year for a couple years… sometimes it has gone for 3-4 years without blooming. This year it went absolutely crazy… and went through 5 bloom cycles… with close to 100 blooms each cycle. The cactus is really too big now… and I probably should prune it down… but I just cannot bring myself to do it… yet.

That’s a “residential hazard” out here. And when you collect cactus (or “cacti”) like I do… you get into prickly situations a lot!

There are a number of cactus plants that use the term “torch” in their common names. They are all bold and beautiful.

Thank you Lena. These blooms are so beautiful and huge… but they only bloom at night… and for one night only. This photograph against the blue sky was taken just after daylight… just before the blooms started to close and die.

I’ve tried shooting them at night… but the lighting is very tricky. Taking the pictures early in the morning is much better… in that short time span when it is actually daylight but the sun hasn’t risen over the mountains yet.
