This is the charred trunk of a massive Pondarosa Pine tree that had been tagged “killer tree” by the forest service and slated for immediate removal. About 80% of the base of the tree had been destroyed by the Little Bear fire of June 2012 north of Ruidoso, New Mexico. The 80 feet tall sentinel of the forest was in danger of imminent collapse.
